Setup Multifactor Authentication
This document provides instructions for installing the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device, and using it to set up Multi-Factor Authentication for your Microsoft 365 account in the app.
Step 1: Sign in to Microsoft 365
Go to the Microsoft 365 login page and sign in with your work or school account and your usual password.
After selecting Sign In, you’ll be prompted to provide more information to set up multi-factor authentication.
Begin the Setup Process: Click Next when prompted to proceed with the setup.
Step 2: Download the Microsoft Authenticator App
The default authentication method is the free Microsoft Authenticator app.
If you don’t already have it installed on your mobile device, download it from your device’s App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
Important: Be sure to download the official Microsoft Authenticator app with Microsoft as the publisher to avoid fraudulent or fake apps.
Step 3: Set Up the Authenticator App
Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device.
Tap the + icon in the top-right corner and select Work or school account.
Scan the QR Code: On your computer, click Next on the “More information required” screen. This will display a QR code.
In the Authenticator app, select Scan QR code and use your device’s camera to scan the QR code displayed on your computer screen.
Step 4: Verify the Setup
Once the QR code is successfully scanned, the account will be added to your Authenticator app.
On your computer, click Next to continue the process.
Provide Additional Verification: The system will prompt you to verify the setup and will send a test notification to the app on your phone.
Tap Approve in the notification on your phone and enter in the number shown on your computer screen.
On your computer, click Next, then Done to complete the setup.
Step 5: Complete the Setup
Once the verification is successful, you’ll see a confirmation message, and your multi-factor authentication setup will be complete.
Step 6: Sign-in Using MFA
The next time you sign-in to Microsoft 365, enter your password as usual.
A notification will be sent to the Microsoft Authenticator app.
Open the app and tap Approve to sign-in, entering the number shown on your computer screen.
