Happy Australia Day for Saturday 26th January or is that Monday 28th January? A few of our clients have asked us what happens with employee wages on a subsituted public holiday, so we thought we would put this one up on the news section for the benefit of all.
Australia Day will be celebrated around our great country on the 26th, however the subsituted public holiday means most employees will not be required to work on 28th. If a full time or part time employee would otherwise have usually worked on the Monday, they receive ordinary rate of pay for that day. If however an employee is required to work on 28th, according to their specific award, they are most likely entitled to higher penalty rates for that day only.
Check your award or talk to us, there may be options for time in lieu or majority agreement subtitution for an alternate day off to suit your business.
